Canada vs. Czechia: A Preview of the 2026 IIHF U18 Women's Worlds (2026)

Get ready, hockey fans! The stage is set for an electrifying showdown at the 2026 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship! This isn't just a tournament; it's a celebration of women's hockey, community, and inclusivity, all coming to life in Nova Scotia from January 10-18, 2026.

Hockey Canada has just unveiled the pre-tournament schedule, giving us a sneak peek at the action to come. Before the main event in Sydney and Membertou, five exciting games will unfold across four communities over three days.

Here's the breakdown:

  • January 5-6: Slovakia vs. Hungary at Canlan Sports in North York, Ontario.
  • January 6: Sweden vs. Switzerland at the Kehoe Forum in Sydney.
  • January 7: Czechia vs. the United States at the RBC Centre in Dartmouth.
  • January 7: Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team vs. Finland at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.

But the excitement doesn't stop on the ice. Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Province of Nova Scotia, is rolling out a series of community initiatives designed to grow the sport and foster inclusivity.

"We are thrilled that fans in the community and throughout the province will have the opportunity to get involved in the event through several impactful initiatives that will leave a lasting legacy on women’s and girls’ hockey, and the community as a whole," says D’Arcy Hutcheson, director of events for Hockey Canada.

Women's and Girls' Hockey Initiatives:

  • Coaching Clinics: Hockey Nova Scotia and the IIHF will host coaching development clinics on January 4 in Halifax and January 5 in Sydney.
  • Indigenous Coach Development: A unique opportunity for emerging Indigenous coaches to gain practical experience by shadowing coaching staffs during the pre-tournament phase.
  • Signature Esso Fun Day: Held in Eskasoni First Nation on January 14, this event will introduce girls of all ages to the game with free basic skills training. Equipment will be provided by Bauer, and National Women’s Team alumna Victoria Bach will be a special guest.
  • Equity in Coaching Conference: Cape Breton University will host this conference on January 16, featuring research presentations and a keynote address by Victoria Bach.

Indigenous Engagement:

  • Ticket Distribution: The Membertou First Nation will receive 1,000 tickets for distribution to local Indigenous community organizations.
  • Cultural Recognition: Players of the game will receive a handmade beaded mayflower, and a special flag designed by Kierra Marshall will be featured in pre-game ceremonies.
  • Team Canada Jersey: A unique jersey, designed in collaboration with the Membertou First Nation, the Ability Collective, and Red Label Kilts, will celebrate the Mi’kmaq community, Cape Breton's nature and culture, and the classic tartan of Nova Scotia.

First-Game Program for New Canadians:

  • Ticket Donation: Two hundred tickets will be donated to local settlement agencies to introduce new Canadians to hockey.
  • Community Support: A clothing and toiletries drive will be held at all Team Canada games to support Nadine’s Comfort Closet, and an expanded recycling and food recovery program will promote sustainability.

And this is the part most people miss... The 2026 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship was awarded to Sydney and Membertou in April 2025, following a successful bid. This tournament is more than just a competition; it's a testament to the collaborative spirit of Hockey Nova Scotia, the Province of Nova Scotia, and the local communities.

But here's where it gets controversial... Do you think these community initiatives will have a lasting impact on the growth of women's hockey? What other steps could be taken to further promote inclusivity in the sport? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
