China's Smartphone Shipments Take a Hit
Smartphone demand in China has taken a downturn, according to Counterpoint Research, which reported a year-on-year decline in shipments in January. Despite this, the company noted an increase in promotional activities during the same month in 2025, suggesting a potential rebound in the market.
The research firm attributed the muted demand in January to vendors starting their promotional campaigns earlier in the year due to the Chinese New Year celebrations and subsidy schemes. This resulted in a 23% drop in shipments, according to Counterpoint.
Huawei, a leading vendor, saw its shipments fall by 27%, but still maintained a substantial market share of 19%. However, domestic competitors Honor, Vivo, and realme are believed to have lost market share, while Oppo managed to hold its ground at 16%.
Counterpoint's findings could be a positive sign for Apple, as it is the only major player reported to have increased both shipments and market share. The US tech giant has faced challenges in the Chinese market, but it now appears to be gaining traction, with China potentially becoming a key growth driver.
Apple's iPhone 17 range is said to have captured the current zeitgeist, but the overall shipment numbers for this month may fluctuate as rival vendors step up their promotions and the new year celebrations continue.
