In a significant development for sports journalism, David Kraft, ESPN's Vice President of News, is set to retire in April after an impressive three-decade tenure with the network. Kraft's retirement was announced by ESPN on Thursday, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in his career that began in 1996 when he joined as an editor for the Olympic coverage.
Kraft stepped into his current role in 2021 and has been instrumental in shaping the news operations at ESPN since serving as a senior director and executive editor from 2015 onward. Reflecting on his time with the company, Kraft shared, "I’ve had a fantastic run with ESPN and am proud of what we’ve accomplished — and continue to accomplish on a daily basis — as a newsroom. Our journalism is in a great place, and we have great people to carry it onward and upward. I very much appreciate the support I’ve gotten from our leadership team since I made this decision."
In his capacity as VP, Kraft oversees ESPN’s Universal News Group, which encompasses all editors across the country’s various newsrooms. This group plays a crucial role in providing editorial direction for ESPN’s television networks, radio/audio platforms, digital content, social media, and push notifications via the ESPN app. Notably, Kraft was a key figure in establishing this group a decade ago, highlighting his long-term vision for sports journalism at the network.
Burke Magnus, ESPN’s content president, praised Kraft's influence by stating, "David Kraft has been a highly respected leader across ESPN’s editorial properties since he joined us in 1996. He never sought the spotlight but has had a strong and important impact behind the scenes and has played a major role in carrying on ESPN’s journalistic principles and practices for many years. We will miss him when he leaves us in April and wish him all the best in his retirement."
Interestingly, Kraft’s departure comes at a time when ESPN’s news division seems to be playing a less central role within the organization.
