The San Francisco Giants have dealt a significant blow to their minor league system, with two of their players facing lengthy suspensions. Luis Custodio, a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher, and Luis Sierra, a 20-year-old right-handed pitcher, have been banned for 56 games each due to positive drug tests. The commissioner's office announced on Monday that both players tested positive for Stanozolol, a banned substance under the minor league drug program for players outside the United States and Canada.
Custodio, who made his mark with the Giants Black in the Dominican Summer League, had an impressive start to his season, boasting a 2-1 record and a 7.94 ERA in 12 relief appearances. His journey began when he signed with the Giants in 2023, following a successful recovery from Tommy John surgery. Meanwhile, Sierra, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles for a $10,000 bonus last June, struggled with the DSL Orioles, posting a 0-2 record and a 9.95 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He was released from the team on January 5th.
The suspensions come as a stark reminder of the strict drug policies in professional baseball. It's worth noting that this is not the first time players have faced such consequences. Just this year, free agent outfielder Max Kepler was suspended for 80 games under the major league program for testing positive for Epitrenbolone. These bans serve as a warning to all players, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the league's drug policies to maintain a fair and competitive environment.
