The English-dubbed trailer for the anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō's manga 'cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood' has been released by GKIDS. The anime, which debuted in Japan in March 2025, is set in a tropical southern island and centers on the experiences of San and her best friend Mayu during the war. The trailer is available for streaming and will be screened in North America on September 4, with an English dub and Japanese subtitles. The anime's release comes 80 years after the end of World War II, and it has been licensed by Viz Media. The manga, published in Shueisha's now-defunct Jump X magazine, won the 18th Annual Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in 2014. Production I.G's short anime film 'Pigtails' was inspired by the manga and won multiple awards, including the Diamond Award in the Animated Film category at the 2016 California Film Awards. The anime stars Hikari Mitsushima and Marika Itō, with animation direction by Yuki Mitsushima and music composition by Kensuke Ushio. Hitomi Tateno, a veteran Studio Ghibli animator, served as the animation producer. The story follows San and Mayu as they navigate the challenges of war and the loss of their friends, set against the backdrop of a tropical southern island.
