Disruption Strikes as the Winter Olympics Begin in Italy
On Saturday morning, just as the Winter Olympic Games commenced, an act of sabotage targeted the rail network near Bologna, Italy, creating significant travel disruptions. According to the Transport Ministry, this incident unfolded on the first full day of the Olympic festivities, raising serious concerns about safety and security.
Police reports detailed three distinct incidents at various locations, leading to delays that affected high-speed, Intercity, and regional train services for as long as two and a half hours. This coordinated attack was classified by authorities as a serious act of sabotage, drawing unsettling parallels to similar disruptions that occurred during the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where France's TGV train network was also struck, resulting in extensive travel chaos.
The ministry, led by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, emphasized that such extreme actions would not mar Italy's reputation on a global stage. Instead, they expressed confidence that the Games would enhance Italy’s image, making it even more appealing and positive.
In response to the attacks, the state-owned railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) temporarily shut down the high-speed station in Bologna. Fortunately, by Saturday afternoon, rail traffic began to stabilize as operations slowly returned to normal.
The police investigation revealed disturbing details: a cabin containing a track switch was set ablaze early in the morning near Pesaro, a city along the Adriatic coast. Hours later, officials discovered severed electrical cables meant for train speed detection in Bologna, and a rudimentary explosive device was found near the tracks at another site.
As of now, no group has taken responsibility for these troubling events, but the apparent coordination suggests a deliberate and organized effort behind the disruptions.
Bologna serves as a critical hub for Italy’s east-west rail connections, linking southern regions with major northern cities like Milan and Venice. Notably, Milan is co-hosting the Winter Games alongside Cortina, which can easily be accessed by train from Venice.
