Kaitlyn Chen's AU Debut Showcases What the WNBA Hasn't Yet Seen (2026)

Kaitlyn Chen’s debut in Athletes Unlimited (AU) is nothing short of a revelation, showcasing a side of her game the WNBA has yet to fully witness. And this is the part most people miss: her transformation from a reserved rookie to a confident on-court leader is as inspiring as it is unexpected. But here’s where it gets controversial—could Chen’s AU performance be a game-changer for her WNBA career, or is it just a fleeting moment of brilliance? Let’s dive in.

Chen, a Princeton and UConn alum, averaged just 10.3 minutes and two points per game in her rookie season with the Valkyries. Fast forward to AU, and those numbers have skyrocketed to 30.6 minutes and 16 points per game. This surge in opportunity has done wonders for her confidence, though she humbly admits it’s still a work in progress. “It’s all sort of new,” Chen shared about her leadership role. “I’ve had to find my confidence again, and being here has been great for that. I’m glad it doesn’t show how much I’m still figuring it out.”

AU Pro Basketball coach and Los Angeles Sparks assistant Zak Buncik has been impressed by Chen’s growth. After observing her from afar during the 2025 W season, he’s now seen her thrive as a team captain in AU. “She’s unbelievable on the court, directing and talking,” Buncik noted. “Off the court, she’s more reserved, but putting her in that captain role helped her bring her on-court leadership to her teammates. She’s done an incredible job.”

Chen is one of six members from the 2025 WNBA Draft Class competing in AU this season, alongside stars like Aneesah Morrow and Te-Hina Paopao. This influx of young talent, championed by the league’s Player Executive Committee (PEC), has enriched the competition, blending rising stars with veterans like Tina Charles and Alysha Clark. “Kaitlyn was a no-brainer,” said PEC member Dorie Harrison. “Her court IQ, talent, and ability to read defenses are unmatched. Plus, she’s just a great person to be around. AU is a community of uplifters, and we’re honored to support her journey.”

Chen’s impact extends beyond scoring. She ranks in the top five in several key stat categories: second in assists per game and three-point percentage, fourth in field goal percentage, and fifth in total points. This efficiency has propelled her to fourth place in leaderboard stat points per game. Through three weeks, she’s delivered eight double-figure scoring performances, including a season-high 32 points.

“Her style fits AU perfectly,” Buncik added. “She’s a natural leader, excels in ball screen action, and her passing is top-notch. Her offensive game, especially her rim scoring and jump shot, has improved dramatically.”

Heading into the final week, Chen sits fifth on the AU leaderboard, within reach of the 2026 league crown. Regardless of her Week Four performance, she’s poised to add a high leaderboard finish to her resume. “Playing in the W and here is very different,” Chen reflected. “But I’ve learned so much in both places. I hope to take the confidence I’ve built in AU into the W season and keep it going.”

Here’s the bold question: Is Chen’s AU success a sign of things to come in the WNBA, or is it a unique product of the AU environment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
