Dan Kwaku Yeboah Criticizes GFA's 'Kwaku Ananse' Black Stars Jersey Design
Renowned sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has sparked debate with his recent criticism of the Black Stars jersey set to represent Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The design, which features a clean white base with bold, abstract line patterns in red, yellow, and green, has been met with mixed reactions.
The jersey's central design element is the iconic black star, a powerful symbol of national pride and identity, accompanied by the Ghana Football Association crest. However, the inclusion of the 'Kwaku Ananse' motif has drawn fire from Yeboah.
In an interview with Vida Adutwumwaa, Yeboah expressed his disapproval, stating, 'What role does Kwaku Ananse play for us? It is not nice, we don’t need any meaning.' He believes the design deviates from the traditional and aesthetically pleasing yellow jersey that previously garnered public acclaim and high patronage.
Yeboah further questioned the GFA's partnership with PUMA, the jersey manufacturer, suggesting that the design could be a commercial decision rather than a football-centric one. He wondered, 'Why should it always be that PUMA is the only company to design our jerseys?'
Despite the controversy, the 'Kwaku Ananse' jersey has generated curiosity and discussion among fans and the media. Some may see it as a bold statement, while others may find it confusing. The debate continues as to whether the design accurately represents Ghana's football identity and heritage.
