Imagine this: Over eight metric tons of cooking oil, meant to help families, vanished! This is the story of a major seizure in Tumpat, where authorities uncovered a significant operation involving subsidized cooking oil. Let's dive into the details.
The Kelantan branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, along with the Pengkalan Kubor Region 3 Marine Police Force, conducted an operation in Kampung Bunohan. Their suspicions were raised by a lorry with local plates. After a brief chase, the driver and two assistants abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes.
Inside the lorry, enforcement officers discovered approximately 450 boxes of branded, subsidized packet cooking oil. The total weight of the seized oil was a staggering 8,330 kilograms! The estimated value of the cooking oil was RM20,825, while the lorry itself was valued at RM45,000. This brings the total value of the seizure to a substantial RM65,825.
But here's where it gets controversial... The case is now under investigation, with authorities looking into a potential violation of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. This law addresses the possession of controlled goods with the intent to commit an offense. The suspects, who escaped the scene, are still at large, and no one has yet come forward to claim ownership of the vehicle or the seized goods.
Efforts to locate the suspects involved a search of the surrounding areas, which lasted nearly two hours.
