Imagine watching a thrilling cricket match, only to be distracted by a fire erupting just outside the stadium! Talk about a game changer... literally! That's exactly what happened during a recent SA20 match between the Paarl Royals and Pretoria Capitals.
News emerged from Edition GL that a fire broke out in the parking lot of Boland Park during the match, briefly stealing the spotlight from the action on the field. But here's the good news: despite the alarming sight, the game wasn't interrupted, and thankfully, no damage was reported.
The fire ignited during the fourth over of the Paarl Royals' chase, specifically in the parking area on the western side of the stadium. Authorities believe the parking lot fire was unrelated to the larger mountain fires that have been plaguing the region. Firefighters quickly responded, extinguishing the blaze by the seventh over. Spectators, though understandably concerned, were not required to evacuate, although some did leave their seats to check on their vehicles—a perfectly reasonable reaction, wouldn't you agree?
Following the incident, images surfaced showing scorched earth, a stark reminder of the intensity of the flames. It's also worth noting that a haze of smoke had already enveloped the ground even before the fire, creating an eerie atmosphere.
Richard das Neves, the assistant coach for the Paarl Royals, confirmed that the team was aware of the fire. "We did notice it," he said. "There have been a few fires around Pearl Valley (where the team was staying) in the last week or so. We were scrambling for DLS in case we had to get off the field. But if there's anywhere in the world where the firefighters know what they're doing, it's here." DLS, or Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, is a calculation used in cricket to adjust targets in weather-affected matches.
Interestingly, Pretoria Capitals captain Keshav Maharaj admitted he was unaware of the fire's exact location, only noticing the excessive smoke. "A fire in the parking lot? Wow," he exclaimed after the game. "There was a lot of smoke out there, so I just assumed it was from that. It's very hot out there."
And this is the part most people miss... The match was already being played under a heavy haze due to wildfires that had been raging in the nearby town of Franschhoek since the previous Wednesday. By Saturday, these fires had spread, fueled by high winds and hot, dry conditions, making them incredibly difficult to contain. Boland Park was already hazy at the start of the match and completely shrouded in smoke by the innings break – a challenging environment for players and fans alike!
Wildfires are a common occurrence in the Western Cape during the summer months, thanks to the combination of high temperatures and strong winds that create ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly across the mountains. Thousands of hectares of vegetation are burned each year. While property damage is relatively rare, the potential for disaster is always present.
As a poignant example, in 2015, a fire caused by arson came dangerously close to the home of fast bowler Dale Steyn while the South African team was competing in the ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Other prominent cricketers, including Faf du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, David Miller, and Morne Morkel, have also resided in the same area, highlighting the potential risk faced by the community.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that the match should have been suspended given the smoky conditions, prioritizing the health and safety of players and spectators. Others might say that South Africans are accustomed to wildfires and disruptions and that the firefighters had the situation under control, so it should continue. What do you think?
