Could we be on the verge of witnessing the most improbable Super Bowl run in recent memory? A questionable decision during a playoff game is sparking major debate and highlighting a young quarterback's nightmare scenario.
The New England Patriots are just one victory away from a Super Bowl appearance that few predicted, following their 28-16 triumph over the Houston Texans in Monday's divisional round showdown. This sets up a tantalizing AFC Championship game next week, where they'll face the Denver Broncos on the road.
The Patriots' victory was largely fueled by a disastrous performance from Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who uncharacteristically threw four interceptions in the first half alone. These turnovers proved incredibly costly, halting drives and gifting the Patriots with excellent field position.
Despite facing the AFC's top-seeded team on their own turf, the Patriots are surprisingly considered the favorites heading into the AFC Championship. But here's where it gets controversial... This is largely due to a devastating injury to Broncos quarterback Bo Nix.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced that Nix suffered a broken ankle during their overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills. The injury requires surgery, sidelining the second-year quarterback for the remainder of the season. This leaves the Broncos with Jarrett Stidham under center, a player with a unique connection to the Patriots. And this is the part most people miss... Stidham was originally drafted by New England in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft and spent three seasons as a backup to both Tom Brady and Cam Newton before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Will Stidham be able to overcome his past and secure a Super Bowl appearance for the Broncos?
Monday's game was a stark contrast to the stellar rookie season Stroud enjoyed, after being drafted second overall by the Texans in 2023. He seemed to struggle to recapture the poise and confidence that defined his initial campaign.
Under pressure, Stroud appeared panicked. Even with a clean pocket, he rushed his throws or simply lacked accuracy. The result was a quartet of interceptions, tying the Texans' franchise record for most in a single playoff game. Stroud also became only the fourth quarterback this century to achieve the dubious distinction of throwing four interceptions in the first half of a playoff game. Ouch!
This disastrous performance may have led Texans coach DeMeco Ryans to consider benching Stroud in favor of veteran Davis Mills, who had a solid 3-0 record with five touchdowns and just one interception when filling in for Stroud earlier in the season.
However, Stroud wasn't the only quarterback struggling with ball security. New England's own Drake Maye, despite being an MVP candidate, fumbled the ball four times – the most ever by a Patriots player in a playoff game. Fortunately for Maye, only two of those fumbles were recovered by the Texans. He also threw an interception, but it came on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the first half.
Maye's struggles weren't entirely unexpected, considering the Houston defense sacked Aaron Rodgers four times and hit him another 12 times the previous week. The Texans defense is known for bringing the pressure.
On the other hand, the Patriots' defense, while not considered elite, possesses a lethal interior pass rush. This proved to be a significant mismatch for the Texans, who have struggled with interior pass protection all season.
The Patriots drew first blood early in the first quarter when Maye connected with DeMario Douglas for a long touchdown on 4th-and-1, capitalizing on an all-out blitz by the Texans. The Texans responded on their next drive with a 42-yard reception by Dalton Schultz, setting up a field goal.
However, a major blow came for the Texans offense when Schultz was ruled out of the game with a calf injury, further limiting Stroud's options.
Despite the setback, the Texans briefly took the lead after a Maye fumble was recovered by Christian Kirk, who scored a touchdown. The Patriots defense quickly retaliated with a Marcus Jones pick-six, followed by a touchdown pass from Maye to former Texan Stefon Diggs, extending New England's lead to 21-10.
Even with Stroud's turnover-filled first half, the Texans managed to close the gap to within one score with two field goals in the third quarter. But a spectacular diving catch by Kayshon Boutte against Houston cornerback Dererek Stingley pushed the Patriots' lead back to 28-16.
With Stroud's struggles continuing, the Texans' chances of a comeback appeared slim. In a move that perfectly illustrated Ryans' lack of confidence in his quarterback, Houston punted on 4th-and-18 with just over four minutes remaining. This decision is really what has everyone talking.
Given Stroud's performance, the odds of converting such a long fourth down were undoubtedly low. But with the Texans trailing by 12 and possessing only one timeout, the punt effectively signaled a surrender. Perhaps Ryans believed his defense had a better chance of making a play than his quarterback, given Stroud's subpar performance.
